As everyone knows, old batteries are usually taken back when an electric vehicle battery is replaced. Why do manufacturers recycle old batteries? Because used electric vehicle batteries have the following three hazards:

(1) Long exposed to the environment, batteries are corroded and damaged, letting heavy metals and acids or alkalis leak out. The micro-cell action of electrochemical corrosion concentrates and accelerates the corrosion of the battery casings in storage and the leakage of pollutants, and speeds up the seepage of electrolyte into soil and groundwater.

(2) The disposal of recycled batteries involves acid dumping. Small secondary lead plants only buy lead-containing battery plates, which leads individual collectors to pour waste acid from batteries directly into soil or city sewers. Soil polluted by such waste acid contains on average 1~50 C/kg of lead, far above the background level of soil lead. The soil organic matter is destroyed, fertility drops and crops cannot grow normally. The heavy metal salts, acids and alkalis in discarded electric vehicle batteries are hazardous waste, and their pollution lasts long, is hidden and does serious damage. Used batteries contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel as well as acidic or alkaline electrolyte solutions, which harm human health and the ecosystem to varying degrees.
