Battery Heating During Charging: Four Causes You Should Know

Sometimes an electric vehicle battery heats abnormally during charging or use, which can reduce battery capacity and shorten its service life. Causes of heating during charging include poor chargers and quality problems. If this happens, you must treat it with caution.

In general, the warmth of an electric vehicle battery during charging is mild and even; it does not get very high, nor is it low temperature. Within the normal range it will not harm the battery, but if the battery overheats excessively and the charger indicator refuses to switch, you need to handle it carefully.

Professionals point out that excessive heat when charging an electric vehicle battery is mainly due to the following four causes:

1. Battery and charger not matched

This is the most common case. Most households have one or more electric vehicles, often of different brands, so the batteries and chargers naturally differ. In daily use they are often mixed up, and a mismatched charger makes the battery give off extra heat while charging, so it becomes hot. Therefore, do not casually use a charger of another brand; use only your own.

2. Heating caused by charger problems

Ordinary chargers have no pulse function, let alone a negative-pulse depolarization function. Such chargers usually cannot hold a constant voltage in the later stage of charging, so the battery voltage exceeds the permitted value, causing heavy gassing, water loss, and heating. A slight temperature rise is normal heating; if the heating is abnormal while the battery itself performs well, the charger is the cause.

3. One of the batteries is short-circuited

Measure the voltage of each battery with a multimeter; the one found to have a very low voltage is short-circuited and needs to be replaced with a new battery.

In fact, a battery gives warning signs before it fails. For example, a battery that did not heat during charging begins to heat while charging after about one year of use (sometimes even less); you can feel it by touching the case. Most users find it odd but pay little attention, since it seems not to affect riding. Then, one summer day, the situation above suddenly occurs.

4. Problems of the battery itself

Heating caused by the battery's own problems such as aging, increased internal resistance, dried-up electrolyte, and internal short circuits. As charging and discharging cycles accumulate, water molecules in the battery are gradually lost, so the battery heats during the electrochemical reaction. In addition, sulfuric acid crystals formed during charging and discharging settle and stick to the plates, increasing the battery's resistance and causing heat. If the heating is due to a short circuit, the best solution is to replace the battery with a new one.

Therefore, when choosing a battery, prefer a high-quality, good-reputation branded battery, such as a Xupai battery. Xupai batteries are of excellent quality with good service; its sales, customer service, technical support, and repair systems are well established, giving consumers better after-sales service.

Also, during charging, always keep the manufacturer's instructions in mind and follow them strictly, especially regarding charging time. Do not think that the longer you charge, the greater the capacity: charging too long will damage the battery and may even cause a fire. Charging too little and frequent shallow charge-discharge cycles will also seriously harm the battery.
