It is understood that each battery pack lasts 2 to 3 years, and refurbished batteries usually last only two or three months, which means a large number of used lead-acid batteries are produced every year. If these batteries are not properly recycled and treated after being discarded, they not only cause serious lead pollution but also contain cadmium, a highly toxic heavy metal. If used batteries are only crudely processed, for example cut open to take out the lead that can still be recovered while the acid and other substances are discharged at will, this easily causes pollution.

As for how the state handles used batteries, the Energy-saving and New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan (2012-2020) issued in 2012 and the Notice on Fiscal Support Policies for the Promotion and Application of New Energy Vehicles from 2016 to 2020 (Draft for Comment) issued in 2014 made clear the main enterprises and directions for recycling used batteries, while the treatment process is still at a stage where independent research and development by enterprises is encouraged.

To prevent some repair shops from modifying and assembling used batteries to pass old ones off as new, it is safer to send used batteries back to the original manufacturer for recycling and treatment.
