Lead-Acid vs. Lithium Battery: Which Is Better?
There are two kinds of electric vehicle batteries on the market today, lead-acid batteries and lithium batteries. So which is better? Xupai compares them from the following angles:
1. Durability
A lead-acid battery generally lasts within 400 deep charge-discharge cycles, has a memory effect, and a lifespan of about two years. If you use a maintenance-free lead-acid battery, note that it loses little water and usually does not need distilled water added during use. A lithium battery, on the other hand, is more durable, consumes more slowly, exceeds 500 charge-discharge cycles, has no memory effect, and generally lasts 4-5 years.
2. Volume and weight
An ordinary lead-acid e-bike battery weighs 16-30 kg and is fairly large in volume; a lithium battery usually weighs 2.5-3 kg and is relatively small, so riding is lighter and carrying is convenient.
3. Mileage
With batteries of the same voltage fully charged, an e-bike with either a lead-acid or a lithium battery can travel 70-80 km. The speed mainly depends on the size of the motor used.

4. Battery capacity
The capacity of a lead-acid battery is about 20 Ah; that of a lithium battery is 8-10 Ah.
5. Environmental protection
After the state issued the Access Conditions for the Lead-Acid Battery Industry in 2012, the lead-acid industry was restructured and consolidated, and most manufacturers have adopted green production with internal formation and no cadmium or arsenic, making it more environmentally friendly and energy-saving; only during recycling can improper methods cause pollution. Lithium batteries are relatively greener in production and recycling.
6. Safety
The lead-acid battery is the safest battery on the market; it is not easy to burn or explode. Lithium batteries, by comparison, have certain safety concerns.
From this comparison it is not hard to see that the two kinds of batteries each have their advantages and disadvantages; which to use should be chosen according to your needs.
