A gel battery is a developmental branch of the lead-acid battery; the method is to add a gelling agent to the sulfuric acid so that the acid electrolyte turns into a gel state. A battery whose electrolyte is in a gel state is usually called a gel battery. The difference between a gel battery and a conventional lead-acid battery has developed from the initial understanding of electrolyte gelation to further research on the electrochemical properties of the basic structure of the electrolyte and its application in the grid and active material. Its most important feature is that, with a relatively small industrial cost, a higher-quality battery can be produced: its discharge curve is flat with a high turning point, its energy and power are more than 20% greater than those of a conventional lead-acid battery, its lifespan is generally about twice as long, its high- and low-temperature performance is much better, and it is mostly used as an energy-storage battery.

The most important features of a gel battery are as follows:

1. Inside a gel battery there is mainly a porous network structure of silicon dioxide with many tiny gaps, which allows the oxygen produced at the positive pole to migrate smoothly to the negative plate, making it easy for the negative pole to absorb and combine it;

2. A gel battery carries a relatively large amount of acid, so its capacity is basically the same as that of an AGM battery;

3. A gel battery has a relatively large internal resistance and generally does not have good high-current discharge performance;

4. Heat diffuses and dissipates easily, the battery does not heat up easily, and the chance of thermal runaway is very small.
