1. High-current charging: this method uses a large charging current to dissolve large lead sulfate crystals. Experiments have found that desulfation by this route only achieves a temporary effect, and the process also worsens water loss and softening of the positive plates, seriously damaging battery life. Few people now use this simple method to repair batteries.

2. Full charge and full discharge repair (deep discharge repair): this means charging the battery completely and then discharging it fully. It can partly repair batteries with mild damage, and it also effectively activates the deep active material of the battery and increases capacity. It suits batteries with mild sulfation or high internal resistance. The key is that the discharge must be thorough, applied to each cell individually. After one to two full charge-discharge cycles, battery capacity usually improves. Do not use this method too often; at most once every three months.

3. Shallow-cycle high-current charging: for sulfated batteries, charge with a high current (within the 5-hour rate current) until slightly overcharged, keeping the electrolyte temperature no higher than 40°C, then discharge by 30%. Repeating this several times reduces and removes sulfation. The mechanism is that the gases released by overcharging flush the lightly sulfated salts on the plate surface, making them detach, dissolve, and convert back into active material. This method clearly repairs mild sulfation, but it is not suitable for old batteries, because while the escaping gas scours the sulfate, it also strongly flushes the active material of the positive plates, softening or even shedding it.

4. Adding activators: for sulfated batteries, add a mixture of pure water with sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate, and tartaric acid, then carry out normal charge-discharge a few times, pour out the pure water, and add a slightly denser acid solution to bring the battery electrolyte back to the standard concentration. If capacity recovers to more than 80%, the repair can be considered successful.
