Charging and Discharge Habits That Make Your Battery Last Longer

Electric vehicles are loved by consumers for their convenience, speed, and environmental friendliness, but do you know the correct way to charge and discharge the battery? Here is the answer from Xupai.

1. Charge every day

Even if your daily riding distance is short and one charge lasts two to three days, we still recommend charging every day so that the battery stays in a shallow-cycle state and its service life is extended. Some early mobile phone users believed a battery is best recharged only after it is almost empty, but that view is wrong: the memory effect of lead-acid batteries is not that strong. Frequently discharging to empty hurts battery life a lot. In most chargers, when the indicator light shows fully charged, the battery may have received only 97% to 99% of its charge. Although the missing 1% to 3% has an almost negligible effect on range, it accumulates as undercharging, so after the light turns to full, continue float charging as long as possible, which also helps suppress battery sulfation.

2. Charge promptly

Sulfation begins as soon as the battery discharges, and obvious sulfation appears within 12 hours. Prompt charging can clear mild sulfation; if you do not charge in time, the sulfate crystals will aggregate into increasingly coarse crystals that ordinary chargers cannot handle, gradually reducing battery capacity and shortening service life. So besides charging daily, recharge as early as possible after use and keep the battery fully charged whenever you can.

3. Periodic deep discharge

A periodic deep discharge also helps activate the battery and can slightly increase its capacity. The usual method is a full discharge on a regular basis, which means riding under normal load on flat ground until the first low-voltage protection kicks in. Note that we especially stress the first low-voltage protection: after the first such protection, the battery voltage will rise again after a while and return to a non-low-voltage state, and continuing to use the battery at that point does great harm to it. After the full discharge, give the battery a full charge, and you will feel the capacity has improved.

4. Build good power-saving habits

Make the most of coasting. When going downhill, cut the power early and coast to slow down. When approaching a traffic light, start coasting in advance to brake as little as possible. A friend once told me he would rather take one more detour than use the brake one more time, and there is sense in that. When starting, it is best to add pedal assistance; it not only speeds up starting but also reduces power loss and wear on battery life.

After reading the above, you should have a better idea of how to charge and discharge an electric vehicle battery. We hope this helps you.
