What to Do When an Electric Vehicle Battery Swells
The battery is the power source of an electric vehicle, and battery problems affect the ride. Yet people often run into all kinds of battery trouble, so here are the causes of a swelling, deformed electric vehicle battery and the ways to solve them.
1. A substandard or mismatched charger. In this case, the charger must be replaced.
2. Battery quality problems. Such batteries are mainly caused by uneven acid filling or insufficient acid quantity during production, but this phenomenon is extremely rare.
3. Charging current too high or charging time too long
When the charging current is too high or charging goes on too long, the temperature of the electrolyte rises quickly and large amounts of gas are generated, loosening and shedding the active material on the plates and making the battery swell.

4. Sulfation of the plates
When a battery with sulfated plates is charged with a high current, the cell voltage and the electrolyte temperature rise quickly, bubbles appear early and violently, and swelling easily follows.
5. Electrolyte viscosity too high
In very cold weather the electrolyte is viscous and seeps slowly into the plate pores, internal resistance grows, and the voltage drop consumed by internal resistance during discharge becomes larger, which makes the electrolyte temperature rise quickly and produces a large amount of gas, increasing the internal gas pressure. If the battery over-discharges at this moment, the temperature climbs even faster and still more gas is produced, the internal pressure grows larger, and the battery case can easily crack open. In addition, the explosive gases produced during charging can cause an immediate explosion if they meet an open flame, splitting the case. Therefore, the charging room must be well ventilated and flames are strictly forbidden.
6. Electrolyte dry-out
After long use a battery loses water and the electrolyte dries out. Overcharging at this point will cause the battery to swell.
